I am a Christian, and I belong to a church that seems to suggest that masturbation is wrong, although there hasn't yet been any teachings on it for as long as I have been a member (three years this April 7th). Every one of my friends from church all seem to believe that it's wrong, too, even my next-door neighbor and his teenage daughter (both of whom I attend church with). However, I believe that, because masturbation isn't mentioned anywhere in the Bible as being right or wrong, it is therefore a matter of one's own personal choice, not a sin. In other words, if it is okay for one Christian to be anti-masturbation, than I believe that it is equally okay for another Christian to be pro-masturbation, as long as we masturbate to rid ourselves of unwanted sexual fantasies and tension build-up, and we do not do it exessively or allow ourselves to become addicted to it. Neither side has the right to impose its beliefs on the other, and only God has the right to punish us if we sin. If God actually is saying that masturbation is sin, then why didn't He explicitly tell us so in the Bible? Christian views on masturbation do not affect me simply because it isn't mentioned anywhere in the Bible. My beliefs have stood for many years, and they still stand today.

Then I read an article about it by Dr. James Dobson of focus on the family who said that it would not harm ones relationship with God. I think religion should stay away from the subject. The basic fact is that almost everybody does it. Saying one shouldn't from a religious perspective just adds guilt. Who needs guilt for something that everybody does anyway. - I recently read it is a good for men to masturbate frequently, that those who did so had less cases of prostrate cancer. And for women, why not practice and become orgasmic, the female orgasm helps the sperm along to the egg.

The Bible clearly states that it is an abomination for a man to spill his seed and that it is better to be wasted on a whore than to do this unspeakable act. This said for men only, women don't have seeds to spill. So I'm confused. What is God's stance on women masturbating? I do not believe, despite what other christians or religious people may think, that masturbation is bad as long as lustful thoughts is not part of the act. as long as one is masturbating and soley focusing on the feeling and not having impure thoughts about someone else, then there's no harm. the bible never mentions masturbation(the sin of onan was not masturbation but deliberately ruining God's plan for a child to be born in that situation), but the bible does mention that engaging in impure thoughts is sinful. unless u feel that in order to masturbate u must use porn, or impure fantasies, then by all means masturbate and don't feel guilty.

I am a very religious Muslim and I masturbate regularly. The way I see it, masturbation is a way to ensure sexual satisfaction both outside of and within marriage. I stopped for Ramadan and for a while afterwards, convinced it was sin, but had to start up again. As for the woman titled "Dr.": I have an active social life; do not date, drink, or take drugs; exercise regularly and vigorously; take a daily vitamin; an eat nutritious food. Masturbation is not a sign of weaknes -- in fact, the more physically healthy I get, the more I want to enjoy my own body. I'd like to know exactly where in Islam does it say that masturbation is forbidden. As a rigorous reader of the Quran, Hadith, and religious works, I have yet to find any injunctions against it. Yes, religious leaders and books preach against it, but where is the solid textual evidence?

I was raised in a relatively conservative christian home and was brought up by two people who both waited until marriage (to each other) for sex. Basically I am not at all new to Christian beliefs or values. I don't think masturbation is a sin. I escpecially don't believe that it is ok or necessary for boys but not girls. Frankly, girls get horny too. Masturbation is a natural way to relieve sexual tension, and especially if you are waiting, that is really important. I think it is also a way to learn about your own body, because you have control over your body and what you do with others, and how they give you pleasure. You have to know how it works for you in order to do that.

Even though I support all religions (save for, you know, satan worshipping), I find it sad how the Catholic church has some teachings that completely inhibit natural desires and functions. Enjoy. ------I've read the many submissions regarding Christians and masturbation, which seem to reflect mostly how a person feels regarding the practice. The average person seems to think that masturbation is something that, in his or her own estimation, would be unpleasing to God. Centuries of over-zealous Christians have taken this line, thereby making themselves and others feel a strong sense of guilt. I personally believe that what the Bible says is true, and I will not go beyond that. To add to what the Bible says is basically putting human words in God's mouth, and human opinions in God's mind. So we have to take what the Bible says at face value and make the appropriate applications. We can be assured that men (I've chosen to deal with my own gender here) have been masturbating ever since the beginning. As long as men have had penises and hands and have been horny, you can be assured that they have masturbated. It is not an innovation of the 20th century. And it doesn't take an Einstein to figure out that if you rub your penis with your hand, you will ejaculate. In fact I would speculate that young men of yesteryear probably did it more, since there weren't all of the other activities to occupy their time (T.V., Sega, Videos, etc.). Regardless of how much or little men have masturbated over the last several thousand years, we know it happened; furthermore God knew it happened and that it will continue to happen. So how has God chosen to deal with this? There is only one section in the Bible that could even remotely be applied to the physical act of masturbation. In Leviticus 15, 16-18 we read: When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water, and it will be unclean till evening. When a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both must bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. The first thing to note here, is that a distinction is made between a man simply having an emission of semen, and having an emission of semen with a woman. For a man to have an emission of semen by himself, this would be most often through masturbation, or less frequently by nocturnal emission. This section of the Bible is a part of the Old Testament ceremonial law, and not part of the moral law (e.g. committing adultery). An emission of semen is considered on the same plane as a woman's menstrual flow. And the only result of either is that they were "ceremonially unclean." Neither was considered sinful. The "sin of Onan" is often cited as a case against masturbation (cf. Genesis 38, 8-10). Onan refused to obey God's command to father a child by his dead brother's wife, so he withdrew and ejaculated on the ground. For doing this, God put him to death. However this does not condemn masturbation. Even a cursory look at this section shows that the sin committed was disobeying a direct command of God. Ejaculating on the ground was not what got Onan in trouble. This section has nothing to do with masturbation. The last place is where Jesus speaks of lust being the same as committing adultery (cf. Matthew 5, 27-28). Paul also talks about "burning with lust" (cf. I Corinthians 7, 1 ff). Certainly we can't argue with that. But one would then have to ask, isn't masturbation the primary way to control a person's lust? If a person lusts and masturbates, has he committed two sins? Is there any difference between lusting and masturbating, as opposed to lusting and not masturbating? I would think that lusting and not masturbating would be worse, because there is no relief; and one can be consumed by such a burning lust. Of course the ideal way to take care of sinful lust is to get married and have sex on a regular basis. But not everybody can do that, nor would it be proper to marry the first person that came along just to have sex. A second thing should be considered as well. Is masturbation always connected with lust? This is subjective and is something that each person would have to ask of him or herself. Speaking for myself, the two are generally connected; however I have at times awakened at night with a full erection and slowly masturbated myself with no particular lustful thoughts. I did it because it felt great! The bottom line to all this is simple. In the Bible, God in no place says either directly or indirectly that masturbation is a sin. The ejaculation of semen would make you ceremonially unclean in the Old Testament. Onan was judged for disobeying God, and not for ejaculating on the ground. Jesus equates sexual lust with the sin of adultery. However none of these instances condemn masturbation. But here is where the sinful human mind likes to work. The devil convinces us that masturbation is shameful and dirty and childish. He convinces us that God doesn't like it (even though God doesn't say so) and that masturbation is only for losers. He wants us to feel guilty when we masturbate. Moreover, the devil wants us to be totally consumed by burning lust and passion. And since he convinces people of all these things, when burning passion is felt, people are then tempted to seek out a wrongful release through a one-night stand or a prostitute rather than masturbate. Wrongful sexual relations can wind up in pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease. God has made us sexual beings. It's nothing to be ashamed about. God's ultimate design is that sex takes place in marriage. However God has also given us a way whereby we can take care of our sexual urges. That way is through masturbation. Even though masturbation should not be a permanent substitute for marital sex, yet he's given us a quick and easy way to take care of things when normal sexual relations are not possible. So we can masturbate to our heart's content, without guilt or fear of judgment, knowing that this is something God in his wisdom permits us to do. It's the safest form of sex possible. And we can put away all of the old myths and fables about masturbation; none of them are true. Besides it has been said that in order for a man to maintain a healthy prostate, he should have a minimum of three ejaculations per week. Masturbation is even good for you! Personally speaking, of course I masturbate. I started when I was 13. I often do it once or twice a day, or sometimes I wait two or three days. Masturbation doesn't consume my life. But it is something I enjoy, and I thank God that he has made it not only possible, but profitable for my life as well. I definitely remember the guilt feelings and all the other associated baggage the devil attached to it. But through the truth of God's Word, I have become convinced that a Christian not only can masturbate, he WILL masturbate and do it often! If I really, really push my boundaries of acceptance, I can maybe see that male masturbation could have been considered a waste of 'seed' in Biblical times, what with the need to have lots of children, but religious views against female masturbation are simply a way of opressing women and their sexuality so that they do not have the self-belief to stand up for themselves. Masturbation is something that takes your mind away from being Godly. You are caught up in the sensations, caught up in physical world. Anything can be this way -- there's a variety of things to fixate on. But its obvious that its harmless compared to hurting others or committing crimes! Its probably better not to, but like tripping, getting stains on your shirt, having snot in your nose, accidently breaking things, losing something valuable, forgeting something important, its human to give into the desire and temptation of so easily getting a high (orgasm). Sex should be within marriage and "in the manner designed by God" according to the Quran. And you must bathe after an orgasm -- if you are to pray. Though it doesn't spell it out, I believe masturbation is discouraged. That makes sense to me --don't occupy your mind with getting high. I have never felt that masturbation was a sin. Many of the prominent ministers in my religion say that masturbation in fine as long as it doesn't replace sex within a marriage. Most of the religious objections to masturbation are due to a part in the Bible where Onan is supposedly punished for masturbating, but that isn't correct. Onan was not punished for masturbating, rather for withdrawing and masturbating instead of impregnating the woman as he was instructed to do. Otherwise, the masturbation would have been fine.

I do feel as though masterbation is a sin, because if it were not, then why would anyone feel guilty, or even question the act. As a dedicated christian and being a teenager I do struggle with it, so I do understand why one would want to make it seem ok in their eyes so they wont have to deal with the guilt. But in all reality it is wrong, because no matter what anyone says it is addictive and you cant msterbate without some kind of image popping in your head, and lustful thinking is a sin in itself anyway. I am a christian. I have been looking for anwsers for about five years now. I have been masturbating for about 4 years. I have been doing it off and on for about that time length. the bible truely does not single out the subject of masturbation. So as a teenager it is hard to know what to do, but if you think you cant do it without lusting towards someone or if you have to use porn to get aroused then that is wrong. i've masturbated since I can count, but I lost count in how many times ive ever masturbated. I didnt learn it off a glossy girl mag I never knew it was called masturbation untill I read the glossy mag. when I did masturbate I felt I was engaging in something wrong.... no one told me it was wrong....but then after reading girl magazines I felt it was ok to masturbate because it was natural...so I masturbated and masturbated...boy it was good, but then it made sense that if I was being religious which is ofocurse a choice then it wasnt very a godly like thing to do or not a way to come closer to god - it was definately a step back. I still masturbate, it is addictive, but not so often - I know it's not a sin classed as murder or fornication or adultry - I would like to give it up completely it gives me nothing apart from an orgasm, and I know an orgasm isnt the way to be close to god. I'm a christian and I believe that if you pray and ask God for the answer to your questions about anything including masturbation he will answer you. Also the bible talks a lot about fornication and sexual immorality. Both those topics are umbrellas I believe with masturbation among other things under them. Now to tell you the truth I masturbate when I just can't stand it anymore. But what is wrong, I feel, is the thoughts I think when I masturbate. Their not conduscent to the life I try so hard to live. To entertain the thoughts of sin and fornication is to sin. I'm working hard to break this habit. I am in my 20's, a devout Christain, go to church regularly and try to live a life pleasing to God, and I am married. The actual act of masturbating is not a sin, or I am sure the Bible would have made it clear. But I believe it should only be done to relieve sexual tension, and not to indulge in sinful thoughts and desires. When your spouse is not available, or selfish in bed, or when you are single and trying to remain a virgin for your future spouse. It should not involve lustful thoughts, porn or any other things of that nature. It should only be used, as I said, to relieve the sexual tension that builds up naturally. The LORD created us, and he created the act of sexual intercourse to be an enjoyable and intimate act between husband and wife. So obviously, sex before marraige is wrong, but masturbation (to relieve tension) is fine.

The Reformed Church is against anything that causes pleasure including masturbation. Most girls I grew up with in the Church were caught or accused of masturbating and punished for it. They also had incest with their Opas and uncles because the Church says we have to obey our elders. As a grown up, I chose masturbation and never went back to my Church.

I am a Jehovah Witness. I truly believe masterbation is wrong. In Leviticus 15, 16-18 we read: When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water, and it will be unclean till evening. I know it does not mention any about a woman masterbating, but in the bible it does refer if a man emmits semen on a woman they both unclean and need to take bath. Jehovah is telling us that masterbation is wrong and the semen produce by man is only good for passing along to a female so they can have children.
